OWL MOTORS’ NEW IVECO DAILY - JS70 OWL
John Skerratt, a qualified
engineer
who
worked
for
Vosper
Thornycroft
Boatbuilders
running
their
tool manufacturing workshop,
started Owl Motor Services
in 1983 as a repair garage in
Southsea, Portsmouth.
The company progressed to
include vehicle recovery in early
1990’s when his son Robert joined
the business.
The company has continued
to
expand
under
Robert’s
management and our employees
have been with us for many years
– some since leaving school.
They are all fully qualified in
their recovery and mechanical
engineering profession.
Robert was joined by his son Ashley
circa. 2012, who also became a
qualified mechanic and recovery
driver. In 2020 the business
ordered a new recovery truck
chassis from Pitter Commercials
Ltd, of Southampton.
We found them to be extremely
helpful during a tricky time with
the many problems the COVID-19
pandemic threw at us due to the
shutdowns in Italy and the UK,
and with our new registration.
We planned a very special
registration plate to celebrate
John’s 70th birthday. He is mostly
retired, but comes in when we
have a vintage vehicle requiring
his knowledge, so we were able to
keep the new registration a secret.
John was instrumental in the
design, build and fitting of the
new cabinets and lifting gear once
the truck chassis arrived – totally
unaware of the plan in progress.

On his 70th birthday – 18th March
– Rob called him in, and the whole
team applauded at his shock when
he saw the truck all ready for use
with the special registration fitted:
JS70 OWL.
It was an emotional unveiling.
The photographs include Archie,
Ashley’s son – so the 4th
generation in the making – to be
involved with the Company that
started nearly 40 years ago with
such a small sum of money from
John’s redundancy pay out. Little
did we know the dramatic effect it
would have on the family.
Who knows what the future will
bring? One thing we do know - we
will still be here in Portsmouth to
help all of our lovely customers
and their friends, neighbours and
families.
