WHEREAS sixty years after the flight of Yuri Gagarin, there is no official universal
insignia for astronauts and cosmonauts who fly into space, and
WHEREAS the Association of Space Explorers, the worldÕs only international
association of astronauts and cosmonauts who have flown into Earth orbit and
beyond, represents the desire of the international community of space travelers to
establish a single, commonly-recognized insignia for all who fly into space, and
WHEREAS the Association of Space Explorers has conceived, designed and approved
a universal astronaut insignia,
NOW THEREFORE IT IS RESOLVED that all space travelers shall be eligible to display
a universal astronaut insignia and receive an individual placement of entry to space
upon certification of spaceflight by a recognized launch provider. The insignia shall
consist of ascending and descending chevrons crowned with a 5-point star,
representing the journey to space and the return to Earth. A circlet encompassing the
chevrons shall be added to astronaut insignia awarded for flight into Earth orbit and
beyond, and
IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED that the Association of Space Explorers, exercising its
historical role representing humanityÕs first emissaries to the stars, shall coordinate
with relevant international authorities and recognized launch providers to establish
and curate an official, universal Registry of Space Travelers and to award astronaut
insignia to eligible recipients.

Curated by the Association of Space Explorers (ASE), the universal Registry of Space
Travelers is a composite register of all persons who have traveled to space. The
Registry is indexed by order of individual spaceflight and includes orbital and
suborbital secondary indices. Candidates eligible for astronaut insignia, certificates
of spaceflight, and placement into the Registry of Space Travelers are approved by
the ASE International Executive Committee, in cooperation with recognized
spaceflight providers.
