History of South Cooper Street
Cooper Street, located in Midtown Memphis, Tennessee, has a rich history deeply intertwined
with the development and evolution of the city itself. In the mid-1800s, as Memphis began to
expand and develop, Cooper Street emerged as a crucial thoroughfare, connecting various
neighborhoods and commercial districts. Named after William Cooper, a prominent Memphis
businessman and landowner, the street quickly became a bustling hub of activity.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Cooper Street experienced rapid growth and
development with the construction of homes, businesses, and cultural institutions along its
route. The street became known for its vibrant commercial district featuring a diverse array of
shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
In recent decades, Cooper Street has undergone revitalization efforts, with historic buildings
being restored and new businesses opening their doors. Today, it has many structures built
more than 50 years ago that have been repurposed, are sitting empty, or somewhere in
