Shorelines II
A new collection of paintings inspired by the shorelines of North Devon, Cornwall and beyond.
Following on from last autumnÕs London exhibition, I have pulled together a selection of
new paintings, as well as some work painted in the recent past, for Shorelines II.
Over the last year, when setting off for a walk, kayak or the occasional run, it has been the
local shorelines of coast and estuary that I have been continually drawn back to.
Detail from Spring visitors,
oil, 76 x 100 cm.

With the majority of my work the intention is to capture the raw beauty of nature and of
course I still enjoy painting birds. However, every so often todayÕs realities creep in. Strong
winds and spring tides can wreak their chaos and what is left behind I find captivating.
ÕSpring visitorsÕ is such a scene; a dead gannet is washed up with other flotsam including a
plastic bottle and a drink can - the newly arrived wheatear is perhaps a small sign of hope.
And that is how it was on that spring morning on Westward Ho! beach. As an artist painting
the natural world, I feel a sense of duty to record these moments honestly, and sometimes
it is not so pretty. The painting process for such a picture is, however, totally absorbing.
I have been quite restrained in my large estuary painting (ÔLow water, Bideford Long
BridgeÕ), just a traffic cone and a couple of tyres are visible, but there was so much more
human waste on the river bed and tidelines. This picture also shows a glimpse of the
historic Bideford Long Bridge, one of the longest mediaeval bridges in England - I have
shown eight arches, there are 24 in total, all varied - but that is a painting for another day.
Big seas and crashing waves have always been demanding and I continue to take up the
challenge with new seascapes. Of note, is ÕHigh tideÕ an oil that I painted several years ago
and have spent a week reworking - altering various aspects, changing some tonal values
and generally enhancing the painting.
