Fresh panic clawed at his stomach. Lucy’s mother was coming
back to punish him. Nothing could be made right. Desperately,
he looked for an escape. This wasn’t happening, this couldn’t be
happening. He was innocent, he didn’t mean to, he couldn’t help
himself.
“What are you? Who is your mother?” There was panic in his voice.
“When is she coming back? I didn’t do anything wrong!”
Lucy frowned. “I can see you. Better than anyone. Better than my
mommy. She is too kind with you.”
With one fluid motion, she scraped the vegetables into the little
red pot with the little red knife.
That was his knife, his pot, his house. He couldn’t breathe.
“I think I should go,” He managed to say. “Someone’s waiting for
me outside.”
“In the storm? I didn’t see anyone.”
A booming roll of thunder echoed above them. He looked around,
terrified. He could see the rope and the ceiling yawning above it.
Where did it lead?
“Yeah, they’re out there alright. Probably getting wet. You know, I
shouldn’t have come in here in the first place. Not with your mom
gone and all. I was just… trying to make sure you were okay. You’ll
tell her I’m sorry, right?”
Lucy shook her head dubiously.
