downpour. When he was right beside her, face to face, she turned
quickly away.
“Come in, come in, we’re making everything wet.”
At her gesture, he stepped around her and into the old house. As
he crossed the threshold, a shiver ran down his spine. Every corner
and dent in the wall seemed oddly familiar. His heart fluttered in
his chest. Rat-ta-ta. Rat-ta-ta. It was much like his childhood home,
at least from what he could tell from the shadows. The layout was
almost identical.
“Let me take your coat,” Lucy offered from behind him. Her voice
was almost too soft to hear.
He shook his head. He could see the coat rack in the shadows, like
a nightmare creature with too many arms. It was full of coats of all
sorts and sizes.
“Who do these belong to?”
“The visitors.”
There was something in her voice that made him turn to face her.
For a moment, she’d sounded resentful, almost angry. Her face, however, was as smooth as stone. She smiled.
“Don’t worry, they won’t bother us. They’re just waiting,” Lucy
slipped around him and headed off deeper into the house, asking
over her shoulder, “Well, can I at least make you some soup?”
“You can make soup?”
Lucy scowled. There was something in her eyes that wasn’t so innocent and soft anymore, but he didn’t mind too much. She was still
