Prologue
2020 has hardly been a typical year. Students were whisked from
classrooms into a new virtual realm, one where jovial camaraderie
withered in the restrictive environment. A plague upended our daily
lives. Family, aquaintences, and countless others are sick and dying.
Issues of justice again have come to the fore. The murder of George
Floyd once again exposed the nation to police brutality against the
Black community. The many other issues of oppression, too numerous to name completely, continue to exist and be fought against.
Yet, art blossoms in the hearts and minds of those across the globe,
the confining quarters of social distancing providing an environment
ripe for its creation. From those hearts and minds manifest art about
social justice. Art about equality. Art about love. Art about anything
and everything.
Art and our lives are deeply intertwined. This is its greatest boon.
We must declare the following:
Black Lives Matter.
No human being is illegal.
Science is real.
The rights of the oppressed are human rights.
Love is love.
These values are held within these pages—in art created by the
students, faculty, and Sacramento’s diverse community of artists, art
in physical, written, and visual forms. We hope the works assembled
here hearten your creativity and imagination. May this magazine, its
writers, and its artists motivate our readers to create art of their own.
