The Beast
Myrenzo Whittaker
I see my fear,
sharp, cold, and dark
A plunge in frozen lakes
reflected in its eye
It goes by many names
Akkorokamui, Kraken, and Loch Ness
Yet words don’t fit the image I see
Corduous limbs and nightmarish frame
It shifts, facing me now
My heart freezes
my blood to slush
It rears back to strike
Its advance and attack
are stopped in place
Limbs halted by
the invisible barrier

The grin spreads
across my face, I turn
to the waiter,
“I’ll have the octopus.”
