Tower by the Sea
I stood upon a tower, as gods
above the waters watching
days as sons and daughters,
and I watched the setting sun
run its obscure course of blazing
and from the waves raise and don
the somber red-gilt garment,
as I had done before.
The sea below was many shades,
more amalgam than a view,
more a hue of constant change
than any sort of blue.
I thought, what force or act
would make a thing so vast
it mocks a mind absurd with past,
immersed in acts conjectured?
I heard soft words I said myself,
on that tower by the sea,
whose features are like mirrors
held up to distant things
who murmur at the clouds,
as I have done before,
lost in acts conjectured.
