higher education in Qatar. Journal of Educational Sciences, Vol. 25.
Education is identified as critical to attaining the goals specified as strategic to Qatar’s social and
economic progress This exploratory study employed a quantitative research design to investigate
factors likely to influence Qatari students’ educational aspirations. Drawing on the Social Cognitive
Theory (SCT) and the Attribution Theory (AT), this study sought to examine students’ academic
aspirations in Qatar. The study used a nationally representative survey involving K-12 students
within Qatar, as part of the 2018 Qatar Education Study (QES). The analysis of data revealed that
personal and household characteristics shape the educational aspirations of student participants,
including age, nationality, parental education and employment status, as well as parental influence.
Statistically significant associations were observed between personal and household variables and
students’ educational aspirations. This study concludes with relevant recommendations and
proposes future research to explore the potential impact of individual aptitude and contextual
factors.

impeding students' choice decisions regarding a university major. a middle eastern case study.
Frontiers in Education
The selection of a university major marks a crucial step in the educational and, subsequently, career
trajectory for many college and university students. However, this choice can be challenging for
many who find it hard to settle on a major that aligns with their academic and professional
aspirations, leading to decisions that may not resonate with their interests or aptitudes. This article
aims to identify the hindrances impeding students’ choice of a preferred university major. As such,
it seeks to further our understanding of the multilevel factors and the interdependencies,
interactions, and relationships within and between systems and subsystems. An exploratory
quantitative case study design was adopted using a survey that involved young Qataris aged 18 -29
years. Descriptive statistics, reliability tests, MANOVA, and ANOVA have been performed.
Findings indicate that among the potential difficulties linked to selecting a university major, the
most prevalent were "family expectations" and the "unavailability of preferred majors." Notably,
there was no significant distinction in the challenges related to major selection between male and
female participants. The findings identified in this study intend to contribute valuable insights for
educational institutions and policymakers to support students as they navigate the complex terrain
of selecting a university major. More research, incorporating a broader sample of past and current
students, is required for generalized application of the findings.
