The present research explores the changes in sport media broadcasting in the Middle East and North
Africa, with specific focus on the consumption of sports programs in Algeria. Case in point is the
use of OTT technologies, and free or low cost IPTV services in particular. The objective is to first
develop an understanding of the transformations taking place in the consumption of sports events.
Using the TAM model with a mixed methods survey conducted on a sample of technophiles and
technophobic individuals, the researchers sought to examine the trends specific to each group as
well as the motivations and gratifications that lead consumers in both groups to opt for one medium
or another. The study found out that there is a growing gap in terms of consumption habits and
preferred mediation tools between the connected technophile individuals and the unconnected and
technophobic individuals,. The study also revealed that socio-economic factors play a major role
in the increasing use of low-cost or free mediation alternatives of sports programs, either in legal
or in illegal ways. Furthermore, he study revealed that new forms of mediation of sports programs
have emerged, these forms foresaw the future adaptation of broadcasters, aimed at meeting the
specific needs of the new generation of connected consumers.

From 25th June to 5th July 2022 the city of Oran located in the west of Algeria hosted the 19th
Mediterranean Games. Algeria’s strategy to organize regional sport events reached its peak in the
1970s with the organization of the 7th Mediterranean Games in 1975 and the African Games in
1979. Algeria had to wait until 1990 to organize another major continental competition, which was
the African Cup of Nations. Between the two Mediterranean Games a number of events outside
sport occurred in the country (and around it). The aim of this paper is through the analysis of
national and international media accounts to uncover these key transformations and examine local
and geopolitical context surrounding the 19th Mediterranean Games, including the significance of
Mediterranean culture in past and contemporary Algeria, symbolized by the host city, Oran.
