1.67±0.12m; and body mass index (BMI): 25.7±5.06 kg/m2]. Online survey questions considered
“before” and “during” confinement. In this study, we observed PA and SL decreased in university
students in Qatar during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants spent more time inactive and more
time sitting. Besides the stressor associated with the illness itself, survey results affirmed a
destructive effect of home confinement on PA, increased sitting time, and sedentary behavior. We
propose the introduction of online PA training on e-learning platforms (e.g., Moodle, MS Teams,
and Zoom), conducted by a professional sports coach in the field of aerobic and anaerobic exercises
varying in intensity level (light, moderate, and vigorous), to be chosen by students depending on
their movement abilities and interests. For university students with severe symptoms of anxiety and
depression, supportive interventions can include physical exercises performed in conjunction with
individual psychological online therapy. The observed reduction in physical activity and energy
expenditure is very likely associated with an increase in body weight. Obesity, in turn, is an
important risk factor for diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. The resulting
reduction in quality of life and life expectancy should in future be taken into account when coping
with pandemics in order to avoid irreparable collateral damages (proportionality of measures).

Effects of Home Confinement on the Intensity of Physical Activity during the COVID-19 Outbreak
in Team Handball According to Country, Gender, Competition Level, and Playing Position: A
Worldwide Study. Int J Environ Res Public Health. 2021 Apr 12;18(8):4050. doi:
10.3390/ijerph18084050. PMID: 33921377; PMCID: PMC8069346.
This study investigated effects of home confinement on physical activity (PA) in Team Handball
during the COVID-19 outbreak. A total of 1359 handball players participated (age: 23 ± 6 years).
Participants from Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa answered an online version of the
International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) considering “before” and “during”
confinement. To our knowledge, this is the first study concerning handball players during COVID19 that establishes differences by country, gender, playing position, and sporting level. The
confinement period has influenced the days, hours, and intensity of PA. Furthermore, COVID-19
confinement induced a marked decrease in PA of all intensities and reduced the mean
categorization of participants from HEPA active to minimally active due to COVID-19 impact.
These observations may be used to inform development of PA recommendations during prolonged
home confinement and reduced ability to train in a team handball and/or indoors setting. There is
a need to translate the findings of this research into future recommendations for home-based
exercise intervention in order to improve participants’ PA participation to maintain the HEPA
active category in handball players during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Identification of such
sporting populations would allow for better-informed and more targeted mitigation strategies.

This study investigated the relationship of body fat and fitness measures in schoolchild handball
players. Twenty-eight young male handball players from handball first youth league volunteered
for the present investigation (age: 10.9 ± 0.72 years; body mass: 54.8 ± 22.9 kg; height: 1.48 ± 0.10
m; body fat: 27.6 ± 9.23%). Young handball players categorized as obese according to %BF
exhibited lower scores in basic physical performance tests. In more detail, increased %BF values
