likely that they will be included by 2025. Furthermore, the definition as drafted by the Swedish
Board of Agriculture in 2024 applies only to arable
land, not to pastures, hay meadows or conventional
afforestation. You can read more in detail about the
definition on the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s
website [37]. In addition to the new definition and
farm payments, each member state has the possibility to provide specific support for the establishment or maintenance of agroforestry. However, no
such support is included in the Swedish strategic
plan [20] - an important area of development for the
future!

The definition of agroforestry according to
the Swedish Board of Agriculture:

It is easy to make the mistake of thinking that the
definition only includes alley cropping systems.
However, we would like to point out that farmers
can establish forest gardens or alley cropping with
edge zones, provided that 50 percent of the block
consists of annual or perennial crops and can be
tilled. There is no specific requirement for the
design of the agroforestry system and the placement of trees. For example, an agricultural block
could consist of ‘forest garden islands’, similar to
groves on arable land. Since any tree type can be
sown and planted (there are no restrictions), even
complex agroforestry systems with high biodiversity
value can be included in the definition.

Agroforestry implies the co-cultivation of
trees with annual or perennial crops.
The trees can be placed in rows, clusters
or individually.
The trees should be planted and produce food, fodder or other ecosystem
services.
The areas where the trees are located
should be managed so that they don’t
become overgrown.
Areas not occupied by trees must be
able to be cultivated with standard agricultural practices and machinery.
It must be possible to harvest the annual
or perennial crop between the trees.
The tillable areas shall cover at least 50
percent of the block.
