Agroforestry för svenska förhållanden 2024 - Flipbook - Page 3
PREFACE
“The way forward for Swedish agriculture is a central
concern for our entire society. It is a matter of life and
death for all Swedes, and this has always been the
case. At least that’s how it appears to a farmer’s son
from Söderslätt in Skåne who knows how seriously
farmers take their work, their task and their vocation
in life. Globalisation and today’s dependence on imports cannot shake this conviction, because you never
know...
In this brochure you will read about Agroforestry,
which is one such way forward. Old pre-industrial
wisdom is combined with post-industrial science in a
consensus on the benefits of trees for the agricultural
landscape. Satellites and cloud services are all very
well, but we also need to use the more down-to-earth
methods. Through millions of years of experience, trees
have become experts in many of the things that society
needs today, and they are tried and trusted companions for the farmer. Now that we have acquired the
knowledge of trees’ abilities, it would be strange if we
did not make the best use of that knowledge - for the
benefit and enjoyment of all.
As the detrimental effects of industrial agriculture have
become more widely recognised, the ethical righteousness of the farmer has been increasingly questioned.
From being a hero producing food for a hungry world,
they are now increasingly portrayed as villains in humanity’s warfare against the planet. The farmer has internalised and reconciled the ethical dilemma of either
producing food or preserving the viability of the soil,
water and nature. Agroforestry represents an opportunity for both producer and consumer to resolve this
conflict. An opportunity for the farmer to once again
become a modern hero who not only feeds the world
but also saves it from its most difficult hardships.
All this can be the gift of the trees and the farmer to
humanity and generations to come.

I början av 2000-talet planterade Ove Johansson ett antal
Loiko-valnötsträd, som anses vara de härdigaste träden av
äkta valnöt (Juglans regia), i sin skogsträdgård i Östloning
i Västernorrland. Plantorna importerades från Vitryssland
genom växtförädlaren Romuald Loiko. Flera plantor skänktes
bort och finns nu på privata och offentliga platser runt om
i Sverige, bland annat i Uppsala botaniska trädgård. Flera
av dem har börjat producera nötter. Loiko-träden finns på
marknaden tack vare Westergaards plantskola, som bedriver
förädlingsarbetet utifrån de mest produktiva av
dessa. Källa: Skogsträdgårdsbloggen.
In the early 2000s Ove Johansson planted a number of Loiko
walnut trees, considered to be the hardiest English walnut
(Juglans regia) trees, in his forest garden in Östloning, Västernorrland, Sweden. The seedlings were imported from Belarus
by plant breeder Romuald Loiko. Several seedlings were
donated and are now in private and public places around
Sweden, including the Uppsala Botanical Garden. Several
of them have started to produce nuts. Loiko trees are now
sold thanks to Westergaard’s nursery, which breeds the most
productive ones. Source: Skogsträdgårdsbloggen.
