pre-schools and schools, as well as in parks. According to the swedish “Forest garden map” there are
more than hundred of forest gardens, most of them
for self-sustenance.
Leo Sjöstrand and the Österlen arboretum association, have
thinned out brushwood and birch, and planted grafted walnut
trees, which are protected by wildlife fences. Establishing trees
is usually easier in forest environments where the vegetation can
be used for shelter and nitrogen fixation. Planting next to a stump
provides extra nutrients to the plant.
Forest gardens
Forest gardening is the most popular type of agroforestry in Sweden, since there are many people who
establish these systems in their gardens, and as
interest grows in growing once own food in a way that
benefits the soil and strengthens the ecosystem.
In a forest garden, woody perennials and herbaceous
plants are mixed to mimic the structure of a forest
ecosystem. The aim is an optimal use of above and
below ground resources, which is achieved by growing plants with different heights and functions. Generally, a forest garden consists of seven layers: a crown
layer, lower tree layer, shrub layer, herb layer, ground
cover layer, vertical layer and a root layer [26, 27]. In
temperate forest gardens, you need to create good
conditions for sunlight to the lower ground layers.
These edible ecosystems can be established on forest
land where edible plants complement existing forest
species, on cropland, where each selected plant can
be edible depending on how the landowner designs
their forest garden.
Many forest gardeners are experimenting with non-traditional species and varieties, such as nut-trees and
different perennial vegetables, and some are also
engaged in breeding for varieties that are more suitable for the Swedish climate. The knowledge that is
obtained by the forest gardeners can potentially be
useful for commercial growers and farmers, with both
larger and smaller businesses.
Many forest gardens have also been established in
“Båt i skogen” / Boat in the Forest”, Sweden.
“We produce food here but at the
same time we create habitats for a
lot of animals that are really struggling in today’s agricultural landscape.
Many are red listed, endangered or
otherwise threatened. The five dams
that we have dug out have had the single largest effect on biodiversity here.
This is a habitat that favours many
species.”
