Unique Businesses Create Character & Prosperity
The unique character of your local community is defined in part
by the businesses that reside there, and that plays a significant
role in your overall satisfaction with where you live and the value
of your home and property. Other interconnected factors include
history and heritage, geography and environment, demographics,
art, and culture.
Environmental Impact Is Reduced
Small local businesses usually set up shop in the town/village
center, providing a centralized and more compact variety that
is much friendlier to a community’s walk score than out of town
shopping malls. This generally means contributing less to sprawl,
traffic congestion, habitat loss and car pollution.
Most New Jobs Are Provided By Local Businesses
Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally. Plus,
jobs in the local community means fewer commuter miles which
means less traffic and car pollution. In Canada, small businesses
(defined as those with fewer than 100 employees) accounted
for almost 98 per cent of all businesses in 2020, employing 8.4
million people or about 70 per cent of the total private sector
workforce (Statistics Canada).
