Why Favour Small & Local Businesses?
Local Economic Stimulus
When you purchase from locally-owned businesses rather than
nationally-owned or chain stores, retail economic studies show
more money is kept in the community because locally-owned
businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service
providers and farms (see Business Alliance for Local Living
Economies, “buy local”, the localism movement, E.F. Schumacher
“small is beautiful”, Institute for Local Self-Reliance, Canadian
Independent Business Alliance “shop local”). Purchasing local
from a mixed-use, mid-rise area helps grow other businesses
as well as the local tax base (reportedly at lower public cost per
acre compared to the average big-box retail store).
Non Profits Receive Greater Support
Local business owners donate more to local charities than nonlocal owners.
