Case study
Brighton Road
When Jim, Martin and Alan moved into their homes in Horley, one of the key goals was to support
them to build some social networks. Each of them have unique challenges that make spending
time in groups or with peers is very difficult. Jim had begun extreme self isolation during covid and
was unable to leave his bedroom in his previous placement. Martin has sensory needs that can
cause him to put himself and others at risk when he feels unsafe. Alan has a particular focus on
food and can become anxious and agitated if he see’s food that he can not have.
Each of the men has their own flat and were initially supported in isolation from each other. Over
the last year the change in their wellbeing and behaviour has been incredible. Through positive risk
taking, persistence and building trust, rapport and routine, they have each achieved remarkable
outcomes. However, perhaps the most amazing change is that they now can spend positive time
together sharing meals and activities.
