Opportunity
Spark is similar to Purpose, it is the interest, passion,
or activity that lights a person up. In past years we
have found that many of the people we support find
it really difficult to identify or communicate about
their Spark.
11% of incidents arose following frustration and
stress when trying to develop or achieve in topics or
areas people were passionate about. This was due
to a lack of qualifications or accessibility in gaining
qualifications, a lack of work experience or accessible
opportunities to spend time doing the things they
loved. This led to feelings of despair and low selfesteem.
Whilst impacting a small group of the Complex Care
cohort, this is thought to be due to other people not
identifying or trying to develop their passions, rather
than a small number being unsuccessful. Many of
the people we support in this cohort have spent
their teenage and young adult years in hospital
settings, as a result they have limited education, life
experience, finances and confidence.

22% of people felt they had made significant
progress in the Spark domain during 2023-2024.
These outcomes included gaining work experience,
qualifications, new experiences or new opportunities
to regularly practise or use their Spark.
Active Prospects have been fortunate to receive
a grant from Nationwide to further our wellbeing
work by directly funding opportunities for people
to improve their wellbeing. This has enabled us to
support some people with equipment, training, or
regular opportunities in the Spark Domain. Examples
of these include:
Purchasing a paddleboard and a waterways license to
make this accessible as much as the weather allows.
Supporting one person to do an assistance dog
training certificate.
Purchasing a fitbit and gym membership
Supporting one person to start sports leadership
qualifications
Supporting someone to do a bushcraft weekend
Purchasing a Royal Horticultural Association pass
Purchasing an annual swimming pass
