These individuals tended to have severelearning disability. Frustration in not being able tocommunicate their needs or wants at the time led toa behavioural occurrence. Some individuals were alsoexperiencing frequent failure in social situations orin being unable to consistently achieve independentof support, these people exclusively had fluctuatingmental capacity.77% of the Complex Care Cohort did somethingsignificantly new for them in 2023-2024, somethingthey had not done before or for many years, enjoyedand have done again. This includes horse riding,paddleboarding, getting a pet, going on holiday, goingon a train, doing their own food shopping, attendinga big event, going to a music concert, starting a class,learning a martial art, going night clubbing, attendingPride and having a birthday party.Whilst some of these things may seem smallor insignificant, for this group they were hugeachievements and were celebrated accordingly.Some people also experienced difficult but meaningfulexperiences. Some of the complex care cohortexperienced the death of someone close to them, theloss of a job, or a parent with a serious health condition.It is notable that these individuals coped with thesetragic events and with support went on to recover andsupport other members of their family.In 2022-2023 8% of the complex care cohort wereengaged in work, volunteering or education. In 20232024 that has risen to 25%. 63% of people felt theyhad made improvement in their skills and it had apositive impact on their lives. Some examples include;1 person has learned new skills with shopping,cooking and cleaning that they have not been able todo independently before3 people have started voluntary work and1 person has started paid employment1 person moved on to more independent livingfollowing significant achievements in skills1 person achieved their first vocational certificate andis working on their second2 people enrolled in college courses in basic skills13
