19% of incidents identified challenges with a lack of
skills in Communication, Social situations or general
Life skills as being an antecedent to behaviour of
concern. These individuals tended to have severe
learning disability. Frustration in not being able to
communicate their needs or wants at the time led to
a behavioural occurrence. Some individuals were also
experiencing frequent failure in social situations or
in being unable to consistently achieve independent
of support, these people exclusively had fluctuating
mental capacity.
77% of the Complex Care Cohort did something
significantly new for them in 2023-2024, something
they had not done before or for many years, enjoyed
and have done again. This includes horse riding,
paddleboarding, getting a pet, going on holiday, going
on a train, doing their own food shopping, attending
a big event, going to a music concert, starting a class,
learning a martial art, going night clubbing, attending
Pride and having a birthday party.
Whilst some of these things may seem small
or insignificant, for this group they were huge
achievements and were celebrated accordingly.
Some people also experienced difficult but meaningful
experiences. Some of the complex care cohort
experienced the death of someone close to them, the
loss of a job, or a parent with a serious health condition.
It is notable that these individuals coped with these
tragic events and with support went on to recover and
support other members of their family.
In 2022-2023 8% of the complex care cohort were
engaged in work, volunteering or education. In 20232024 that has risen to 25%. 63% of people felt they
had made improvement in their skills and it had a
positive impact on their lives. Some examples include;
1 person has learned new skills with shopping,
cooking and cleaning that they have not been able to
do independently before
3 people have started voluntary work and
1 person has started paid employment
1 person moved on to more independent living
following significant achievements in skills
1 person achieved their first vocational certificate and
is working on their second
2 people enrolled in college courses in basic skills
