33% incidents tracked identified difficulty with
managing and experiencing strong emotions in
2023-2024. The most common emotion that was
difficult to manage was anxiety and 4 people
experienced such overwhelming emotional states
that they would go into states of shut down lasting
for hours or days at a time, or meltdown in which
they may have multiple behaviours of concern
and find it difficult to hear or respond to support
during that time. Overload was exclusively occurring
in individuals with additional sensory needs and
diagnoses of ADHD and autism.
