Active Prospects Impact Report 2024. - Flipbook - Page 11
Many of our homes have introduced their own
environmentally friendly initiatives:
+ Reusable water bottles and food containers are now
commonplace across our homes.
+ Our Brighton & Hove team have introduced regular
meat-free days.
+ Two of our services in Horley are growing their own
vegetables, and using that as a way to encourage
more cooking among people we support.
+ Many homes have reported an increase in use of lowenergy air fryers.
This year we introduced a Bright Spark Innovation
project, which invited staff and people we support to
submit innovative ideas which either made a positive
contribution to people’s quality of lives; helped us to
run our organisation more efficiently and effectively;
or made a positive impact on the environment. Up to
£5k and organisational support was on offer to make
the idea happen.
The winner of the first round was Michael
McLachlan, who lives at one of our homes in
Caterham. Michael had the idea of increasing
biodiversity across our gardens, through a menu of
biodiversity options, depending on the size or layout
of each garden. Options include:
+ Water tubs – recessed to ground level
+ Water Butts
+ Bug hotels
+ Bird feeders
+ Bird nesting
+ Wild meadows
+ Cut holes for hedgehogs
+ Compost area
We launched the project through a pilot at one of
our homes in Kenley and look forward to rolling out
the project to other homes in 2025.
“
I hope my idea will make the world a better
place and improve people’s wellbeing.”
Michael McLachlan
