Pack and Troopcompete in events organised by the Cromwell District of theScout Association with a proud record of success, fullyjustifying the Group’s motto ‘Nulli Secundi’.Cubs are eligible to become Scouts when they reach ten-anda-half, and at fifteen-and-a-half they can graduate to theVenture Scouts. The Sea Scout Troop offers a range ofactivities including canoeing, sailing, pioneering, orienteering,hill walking and camping.The Sea Scouts are based at the old swimming pool on HoltIsland dug out in 1913 but closed to the public in 1949.Above: Mick Jones, The BoathavenPhoto: Stuart Littlewood/Pentax MXL.H. Jones & Son Ltd was started by Mick’s father, Laurie, in 1946. The firm originally designed andbuilt river and sea-going cruisers, small yachts and motor sailers.The 13-acre marina site with 120 berths was specially dug, and became established in 1958. It isthought to be one of the oldest inland marinas in the country. The boatbuilding staff now undertakerefit and repair work. Among the facilities is one of the largest chandlery shops in East Anglia and abrokerage department that has become one of the busiest cruiser sales centres in the region.Page 90
