Economic ProsperitySDG&E GrantEnables FamilyChildcare CertificationsTo improve the economicself-sufficiency of women ofcolor, SDG&E provided a grant tosupport the Chicano Federation’sSTEPS to Success for FamilyChildcare Providers program.The STEPS program helpswomen open family childcarecenters by offering training andresources that strengthen theirknowledge about the industry.The 2023 cohort includedchildcare providers fromChula Vista and southSan Diego. The success ofthese small businesses alsoaddresses the currentchildcare crisis by providingvulnerable families withaccess to affordable childcare.Developing Diversity inthe Trades Through theCompetitive Edge ProgramTwelve young men andwomen started their careersin the utility field after graduatingin July from a six-week paidworkforce development programcalled Competitive Edge. Nowin its second year, the programis made possible throughSDG&E’s partnership with theCounty of San Diego BlackChamber of Commerce,San Diego City College, A.M.Ortega and Jingoli Power. Most ofthe high-paying trades positionsin the market do not reflectthe diversity of the populationsthat they serve. To address this,Competitive Edge pays underrepresented students for thetraining, enabling them to explorea new field, while also providingmentorship and guaranteedplacement with an SDG&Econtractor upon completion.“I have continued to grow since my experience inthe inaugural cohort last year, and I wish the samesuccess to the new group of graduates.”- Aljanae Beamon, Competitive Edge GraduateSDG&E InternsShine in ServiceAs part of SDG&E’s inauguralsocial responsibility project,41 interns spent four weeksin the summer volunteeringwith five local nonprofitorganizations, helping withmarketing, content creation,database management andbusiness development.In total, they spent 200 hoursin the service of organizations,including Rise Up Industries(RUI). SDG&E supports itsReentry Program which providesindividuals returning fromincarceration with employmentand job training. Interns createdsocial media content for RUIto utilize that raises awarenessabout the experiences of justiceimpacted individuals.
