VERGENNES CITY HALL & OPERA HOUSE
120 Main Street
This brick and marble structure was built in 1897 for two purposes that continue today — to house
the city's offices on the first floor and an opera house on the second. The building was designed and
engineered by Thomas F. Chappell and Arthur H. Smith of Rutland, Vermont. The building has hosted
two U.S. Presidents: James Garfield and Herbert Hoover. The Vergennes Opera House was restored in
1994 by a grassroots community effort and hosts musicians, theater, films and other community
events year-round. The stage boasts a restored hand-painted, vaudeville-era style canvas stage
curtain. The Vergennes Partnership office is also located just inside city hall.
