Arcadia Children’s Early Learning Centre
As a part of its strategy for Easter Bush Campus, the University
of Edinburgh required a new Early Years childcare facility. The
provision of this facility would allow the University to attract
and retain the highest quality researchers while supporting
their childcare needs.
The building design and finishes are in keeping with the surrounding areas. Externally a hit and miss natural Siberian larch
timber cladding factory treated with SiOO:X has been utilised
along with full height curtain walling to the south elevations
ensuring panoramic views are achieved from all playrooms.
Solar shading to these areas is provided by a bespoke canopy.
The central dining area has enhanced natural daylight due to
the innovative modular roof sections designed to allow upright
glazing into these areas with reduced overheating.
The orientation of the building on site was vital to the development for the smooth operation of the facility and to maximise
the available views. The building has south facing play rooms for
all children to benefit from wide ranging views over the rolling
