Match 4
What do people open as North? 4[ is the go
these days but diamonds is the suit with texture,
so 1[ might be preferred by some. The problem
with that is partner taking a solo flight to 5{.
Match 3
4] is dicey but it can make, unless South leads a
trump!
Half of those in it were successful, often doubled.
Say South leads a diamond. Ruff, [A-ruff, diamond ruff, heart ruff. Then lead a club up. It's
hard for South not to split, so {3-J-K-A and a diamond back.
After winning the }A, declarer has to lead the
]Q! In chess terms, this maintains the opposition. If you play ]A-Q instead, South can duck.
Match 5
You have to bid your 24-point vulnerable 3NTs to
do well. Equally, you have to shoot them.
3NT made more often than not. South has to grab
one ace to lead a spade through, using the other
one to cash the 13th spade.
Nobody doubles a strong notrump these days.
I was hoping to see at least one 500 from the 24
Open and Mixed tables but No.
Just 100 or 140 for every East-West.
