Kidney Care Campaign - Presentation - Page 7
The Cost of Kidney Disease
• Cost of providing dialysis treatments in Saskatchewan
is an average of $50 million per year.
• In-hospital dialysis in Saskatchewan costs an average
of $75,000 per person annually.
• A kidney transplant costs close to $100,000 for the
first year of treatment.
• Care for an adult patient with chronic kidney disease
has doubled since 2015.
• Kidney disease significantly increases the risk of
other life-threatening conditions such as heart disease,
stroke, diabetes and limb amputations, further
increasing treatment costs.
However, if detected early, there are widely
available, comparatively inexpensive treatments
that have been shown to slow or even stop
the decrease in kidney function.
Screening for kidney disease in high-risk
populations is by far the most cost-effective
option, allowing for early diagnosis and slowing
the progression of chronic kidney disease.
?
Who is
at risk?
There are several risk
factors for kidney
disease, which can affect
individuals of any age.
Some of these factors
are controllable, such as
smoking, while others
are beyond one’s control.
People with diabetes,
high blood pressure,
or a family history of
kidney disease are at
an increased risk of
developing the condition.
People of Indigenous,
Asian, South Asian,
Pacific Islanders, African/
Caribbean and Hispanic
descent are also at higher
risk, but you may develop
kidney disease even if
you do not fall into one
of these groups.
