Introduction
This is the first book produced for the St Ives Photo-Publication
Group, which was set up to encourage photographic work of interest
and value to the local community.
In 2000 the St Ives Photographic Club showed its Millennium
collection of prints on the theme Faces of St Ives. Many who visited the
exhibition enjoyed it so much that they suggested a book on the
subject.
This is the result - a documentary portraying a cross-section of the
community in St Ives at the start of the new Millennium. It is designed
to interest present-day local people and future generations, with images
and text recording an important time in the town’s history.
photographers George Dellar, James Bunn and Leszek Gawin who
kindly contributed some of their work to help fill the inevitable gaps.
And to Peter Milbank who invited me aboard his microlight to shoot
aerial pictures of the town. Special thanks go to John Souter, who
designed the book, and his colleagues at CLE-Print who were
generous with help and advice in its production.
Vital financial support for the project came from:
St Ives Town Council
Huntingdonshire District Council
The Goodliff Fund
and Mann Egerton/Inchcape.
The book includes most of the pictures I shot for the Millennium
collection and many new ones taken since. In the process I met some
remarkable characters with great stories to tell about their interests,
achievements and service to the community. St Ives is indeed fortunate
in the townspeople it has, and I feel privileged to have taken their
picture.
And our Member of Parliament, Jonathan Djanogly, does us proud
with his Foreword.
A project such as this can only be carried out with the co-operation of
many friends, whom I must thank. First, I’m grateful to fellow

Finally, a heartfelt thank-you to all who submitted to the camera lens
with such good humour.
