CANADA'S TOP SMALL & MEDIUM EMPLOYERS (2025)
At Redbrick, it’s all about structural cohesion
I
n her role as corporate events
manager at Victoria-based
software company Redbrick
Technologies Inc., Shelby
Watson gets to be involved in a
lot of undeniably cool things.
She helps coordinate community
events that Redbrick sponsors,
such as TEDxVictoria, which
returned to the city after nine
years in 2024, and the Victoria
Pride Parade.
She also organizes internal functions, including Redbrick’s yearly
Leaders Summit. It brings leaders
from Redbrick’s five portfolio companies in Canada and the United
States (Redbrick also has an office
in Minneapolis, Minn.) to the B.C.
capital for three days of speakers,
learning and team building.
“In my job, I have the freedom
to design these amazing events
that bring Redbrickers together,”
Watson says. “And it was amazing
to pull off TEDxVictoria last year,
doing it for the first time and with
quite a tight deadline, and to see
its success and the YouTube videos
going live, and the positive ripple
effect of those talks. It was a career
highlight, for sure.”
But she adds that she couldn’t
have done it without the supportive culture of her employer of
more than three years. “The really
overarching theme is, and I don’t
want this to sound clichéd, you
do feel part of a larger family here
and that you’re not just a number.
You really feel well-looked-after
and appreciated, whether that’s
through recognition or the collaborative environment it offers.
Shouldn’t every employer be
offering that? But it’s so shocking
that that’s not the norm.”
Watson’s perspective matches
that of Emily Hann, Redbrick’s
director of people and culture.
“From the top down, our culture is
genuinely collaborative and inclusive.” she says. “You’ll always see
employees at all levels be a part of
our projects, innovating together.
We really harness all the amazingly diverse perspectives we have on
the team, which in turn allows us
to innovate and see growth within
the business.
“We take care of each other and
that’s really felt across the team,”
she continues. “We have a culture
where we take care of the whole
person. It’s not only having familyfriendly policies that take care of
our out-of-work obligations, such
as flexible work schedules and
such, but also from a personal and
professional growth perspective
— there are lots of career-development opportunities and internal
promotions. We do everything
we can to empower and support
our team to unlock their full
potential.”
Hann has personally benefited
from Redbrick’s understanding
of employees’ personal issues. “I
“FROM THE TOP DOWN, OUR CULTURE IS GENUINELY
COLLABORATIVE AND INCLUSIVE. YOU’LL ALWAYS SEE
EMPLOYEES AT ALL LEVELS BE A PART OF OUR PROJECTS,
INNOVATING TOGETHER.”
