Before coming to St Ives Chris was a picture
librarian and book-dealer in Blackheath and his
wife Barbara taught in London schools. Both gave
up professional careers for their life’s ambition - to
open a bookshop.
They took over Brunner Books in White Hart Court
in 1999, keeping the original name established
since the 1980s.
For relaxation the couple take part in the Nelson’s
Head pub-quiz league team and Barbara also finds
time for cycling and swimming.

Doug has lived all his life in and around St Ives
and went to school at St Ivo. He took up a
career in the world of insurance and now runs
his own insurance brokerage in the town.
Over the years Doug has actively involved
himself with the scouts, the rowing club and
the athletics club. He also served as a governor
of the Thorndown schools. He is married to
Julie and they have two teenage children,
Samantha and David.
He became involved in local politics, he says,
for the simple reason that the town had given
him so much that he wanted to put something
back, and civic duty is a very good way of
doing it. Doug was elected Mayor from 2001 to
2002, a turbulent time in the town’s history.
He is pictured here touring the construction of
the Compass Point Business Park.
