TELECOMMUNICATIONS:
TECHNODIGENOUS:
Following a similar methodology as
the solar canoes, Nia Tero funded
work by Rhizomatica to accelerate
design and deployment of eight,
suitcase-size telecommunication
devices (Hermes boxes) to Indigenous partners in Amazonia. These
economical and robust devices enable
the sharing of digital content over the
analog network of radio stations,
which are ubiquitous across the region.
The Hermes boxes are much more
affordable and reliable than satellite
internet options (where this option
may exist), and yet expand bandwidth
from traditional radio-based communication. We look forward to learning
together with our partners as this
work progresses in 2022.
In May 2021, Nia Tero and the
Tenure Facility held the second ever
3-day Technodigenous event with
the theme of “Diversity of Tenure
and Technology”. The global
convening fostered rich learning
between Indigenous practitioners
and non-Indigenous technologists,
including case studies and codesign work sessions.
