Known and admired as a hard-working local
politician, John combines his duties as a Town and
District Councillor with his job as manager with a
local engineering firm. He was elected Mayor of St
Ives for the third time in five years to lead the St Ives
community into Year 2001, the 1000th anniversary of
the discovery of the bones of St Ivo - an event
commemorated by the building of St Ivo Priory from
which the town took its name. He is chairman of the
St Ives Industrialists Association and serves on other
committees too numerous to mention.
Born in war-torn East London, John still sometimes
likes to live dangerously. He has scuba-dived with
dolphins in the Red Sea, paraglided off the top of Mt
Babadag in Turkey and survived a crocodile attack in
the Gambia. He grew up in Wanstead, the
parliamentary constituency of Winston Churchill hence his middle name. He and his wife Jean and
their two daughters moved to St Ives 30 years ago.
To mark the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday the Town
Council purchased a limited-edition portrait by
photographer Anthony Crickmay to hang in the
Mayor’s parlour, and John is pictured with the
striking image of this much-loved member of the
Royal Family.
