Hollings Cancer Center In Brief
Hollings IN BRIEF
Expanded Clinic
Hollings celebrated the opening of an expansion of the Wendy
and Keith Wellin Head and Neck Clinic. The clinic, which now
occupies the entire 10th floor of Rutledge Tower, gained more
than 7,000 square feet, allowing for new exam rooms, infusion
rooms, space for research teams and the ability to conduct
telehealth visits, when appropriate, to better serve people across
the state.
“The long-needed upgrade and changes to the clinic have made
it a much better place to care for our patients and also allow our
physicians to do their job much more efficiently and effectively,”
said Hollings director Raymond N. DuBois, M.D., Ph.D. ◗

Surgeon-Scientist
Colorectal cancer surgeon Thomas Curran, M.D., is one
of only 12 surgeons from across the country chosen for the
National Cancer Institute’s Early-stage Surgeon Scientist
Program (ESSP). This program ensures surgeons have
time to perform research. He’s investigating why too few
patients go home with anticoagulants, commonly called
blood thinners, to prevent blood clots after gastrointestinal,
gynecologic or urologic cancer surgery. ◗

Hollings director Raymond N. DuBois, M.D., Ph.D.,
was inducted as a fellow into the Royal College of
Physicians (RCP).
The Royal College of Physicians was established in 1518 by
a royal charter from King Henry VIII. The college's founding
aim was to professionalize physicians through an academic
body that required a degree and an exam before entry.
Today, the RCP seeks to "drive improvements in health
and healthcare through advocacy, education and research."
Fellows are senior clinicians who have demonstrated
achievement and impact in the field of medicine. ◗
