FERRISBURGH-VERGENNES TRAIN STATION
& ADDISON COUNTY VISITORS CENTER
49 Park Lane, Ferrisburgh
With 7.7 miles of navigable river to Lake Champlain and a long established North American Indian
trail running north to Canada and south to Long Island, Vergennes was a natural travel hub. Soon
after trains came to Vermont in the 1840s, the Rutland and Burlington Railroad laid down tracks that
passed near Vergennes. The train station, now the oldest wooden station house in the state, was
built in 1849. Originally the station featured two separate waiting areas – one for men and smokers
and the other for women and children. The station was abandoned in 1953 when passenger trains
stopped running north of Rutland. In 2012, the station was moved a half mile to its present location
just outside the Vergennes city line in Ferrisburgh. It now serves as an intermodal Amtrak and bus
station, co-located with a free park and ride lot. Passenger rail service began again in 2022 with the
extension of Amtrak’s Ethan Allen Express line from Rutland to Burlington. At this time, the Addison
County Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center relocated to the station. Nearby bus service is
provided by Tri-Valley Transit, Vermont Translines and Greyhound.
