We believe that there should be no decisions made about
Indigenous territories without Indigenous peoples’
agreement and deep engagement.
COP26 marked a striking departure
from prior climate conferences
through a pronounced and sustained
high level visibility of Indigenous
voices, presence, and leadership both
within and beyond the meeting venue.
Indigenous leaders spoke at the World
Leaders Summit, sharing the stage
with presidents, prime ministers, and
royalty. Many Indigenous leaders,
especially women, were prominent
voices on panels and deliberations
throughout COP26.
Significant multi-billion dollar funding
pledges from governments and
philanthropies were announced at
COP26, such as the “Protecting Our
Planet Challenge” and a commitment
to help Indigenous peoples prevent
deforestation. Outcome documents
and key decisions at COP26
specifically included Indigenous
peoples’ rights and roles in climate
and biodiversity action. In 2022
and beyond, we need to make sure
that these commitments are carried
into action.
