Case Study 01
Architect Leo Qvarsebo
Large picture windows frame views over the landscape, while
the front of the house opens out to a large wooden terrace withversatile play and relaxation space. There is a rope connected to
the peak of the roof so that residents can climb up the slope of
the facade. The roof slopes shed water very efficiently resulting
in powerful natural cleaning.
Leo Qvasebo designed himself a playful triangular form summer
house in the Swedish countryside. He describes it as being “a
bit like a tree house for adults”. The triangular profile allows the
sloping front facade to become a climbing wall.
The triangular profile creates a hierarchy of spaces inside the
split-level structure. At the bottom is a spacious living room and
kitchen with rooms at the upper levels becoming increasingly
compact and intimate.
Qvarsebo designed the summer retreat for himself and his children. Positioned between a patch of woodland and a wild flower
pasture in Dalarna, the Qvarsebo Summerhouse was designed to
sit with sympathy and make the most of the picturesque setting.
To achieve this the house is built in high quality Swedish fir and
the external surfaces are treated with environmentally friendly
wood protection which has weathered to a natural grey nuance.
Crafted and built in 2014 by local carpenters and constructors,
the Qvarsebo Summerhouse has matured into a beautiful to
the eye artefact giving people a sense of well-being and complementing the environment. It sits lightly on the landscape.
