CHAIRMAN’S
STATEMENT
Testament to how far
Environment, Social and
Governance (ESG) has become
embedded in the design,
build and occupation of office
buildings, is reflected in this
year’s high-quality entries.
This has reinforced the decision
we made to introduce the new
ESG category for the firsttime last year, to celebrate the
projects with sustainability at
the heart.
What was particularly noticeable was the leap
in the number of refurbishment submissions
as people are more concerned about embodied
carbon and saving our heritage. It’s also great
to see how teams behind these impressive
projects are obviously proud to show what they
have achieved and not just with the physical
buildings, but the contribution they have made
to the wider community.
This is one of the few industry awards
where the judges visit each shortlisted entry,
recognising how the clients, consultants and
contractors are far more focused on social
value. Instead of people coming to offices to
work, it’s about social interaction, community,
learning, and enjoyment, not just the physical
building.
The workplace is now the kaleidoscope of
different uses. For staff, clients and often
the public, be they cafes, fitness rooms,
parks, terraces, art, conference, and theatre
space, coupled with the quality of design and
finishings on par with the high-end hospitality
industry.
