DIRECTOR’S
MESSAGE
As the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer
center in South Carolina, and one of 72 in the country, our
work is deeply rooted in evidence-based practice and in driving
scientific discoveries that translate directly to patient care across
the state.
This elite status sets us apart as we fulfill our mission to reduce
the cancer burden in South Carolina with special emphasis on
the needs of underserved populations.
This past spring, the Hollings team submitted our application
to the NCI for the five-year renewal of our Cancer Center
Support Grant (CCSG) and, in September, hosted reviewers
who evaluated every aspect of our operations, clinical programs,
research and education. This rigorous evaluation process is
conducted by nationally recognized peer reviewers who evaluate
cancer centers for basic and translational science programs,
clinical and population-based research, cancer education,
community outreach, and the center’s clinical growth and
translation of research to patient care.
The CCSG supports our mission by funding cutting-edge
research and clinical programs that offer patients the latest
forms of cancer treatments and access to clinical trials, training
scientists and physicians, and providing education and outreach
about cancer prevention and screenings.

I am proud to say that we were able to share significant growth
and advances with the NCI representatives since our last review
five years ago and are optimistic about their final review of
Hollings and what that means for the people we serve.
But with cancer, there is always much work to do. We are grateful
to have the support of many, especially our state and federal
leaders. We will continue to lead and innovate with scientific
breakthroughs and provision of the highest level of care in the
state, which results in helping thousands of patients in South
Carolina and beyond when faced with a cancer diagnosis.
