Introduction
Languages Connect, Ireland’s Strategy for Foreign
Languages in Education was launched in December 2017.
Action 1.D.1 in the Strategy is to “consider ways to
encourage more senior cycle, especially transition year
students, to avail of language exchange opportunities.”
There are 8 billion people in the world, 748 million in Europe and
5 million in Ireland. Ireland is not on the list of the top 100 most populous
countries. In the greater scheme of things, Ireland is a small country with a
very small population, so in order to play our part on the world stage, we need
to be able to communicate with others and become familiar with a world
beyond Ireland. Languages, travel and language teachers can facilitate this.
PPLI have put together the following manual and toolkit based on the some
needs identified in feedback received from teachers on their experiences of
school exchanges.
