Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters
Check All Cords and Plugs
The ground-fault circuit interrupter,
or GFCI, is a fast-acting circuit breaker
designed to shut off electric power in
the event of a ground fault within as
little as 1/40 of a second. The GFCI is
rated to trip quickly enough to
prevent an electrical incident.
Check all cords, plugs, surge
protectors, and extension cords for
frayed casing, exposed wire, or
broken components. Even worn
cords can be a risk for shock, short
circuit, or fire.
Extension Cords
Using the Correct Bulb
Extension cords should only be used
as a temporary measure, and never
for your space heaters or air
conditioners.
When
using
an
extension cord, make sure it is
properly rated for the intended use,
indoor or outdoor.
Only use lightbulbs at or below the
maximum wattage listed on your
lamp or light. Using the incorrect
bulb can lead to overheating,
damage to the light fixture, or
cause internal wiring to become
brittle - leading to higher risks of a
bulb catching fire.
