One of the features of children’s learning
at Stage 3 is that they like to make lists.
They also like to gather information
about people and topics that are of
interest to them. During this phase, pupils
should be encouraged to collect
information on the topic or person they
want to write about, and to compile their
own word lists in English, Irish and their
HL. If this becomes a normal part of the
way they work, they will gradually
accumulate a personal multilingual
dictionary that reflects their language
development as well as their interests
In a multilingual environment pupils will
often use their agency to research the
title of a favourite book or song, the word
for a preferred food or sport, etc. in
multiple languages (Figure 21). Their
research is facilitated by classmates who
speak
languages
other
than
the
language of schooling.
