The business has a flat hierarchy which enables a focus on distributed rather than
hierarchical leadership. This leadership approach harnessed with clear strategic intent
and a consistent focus on continuous improvement in every aspect of the business has
been driving substantial change. There are steering and working groups delivering a
variety of improvements across the quality, productivity, responsibility, safety and people
agendas. Each steering group has a Board member sponsor and has volunteer members
from across the business.
Retaining people and development
We recognise our people as our strongest asset. In 2020 we were proud to be winners of
the Best family business in East Anglia and the East of England.
Central to our approach to retain people is to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to
develop within their role and the wider business. The average length of service is 13 years
(in 2022) and we celebrate these incredible milestones and loyalty with long service
awards.
We support the development of mastery and autonomy within roles through internal
development programmes that lead to fulfilling careers. We support industry led training
abroad with our loom suppliers, external training is available in areas such as marketing and
social media, emergency first aid, sustainability, formal leadership and management
qualifications, coaching and networking opportunities as well as general interest courses.
Communication and consultation
We have a principle of openness and engage in companywide consultation on significant
issues. Everyone in the company contributed to the consultation that generated our values
statement that is central to our culture deck, an open source document that guides who we
are, what we do and how we do it. Our people group facilitates our yearly staff survey,
weekly and monthly communication emails and engaging social events.
We have a quarterly company committee meeting for staff to review, progress and
feedback on ideas collected from suggestion boxes and other communication channels. This
currently comprises of five nominated members of staff who represent colleagues from all
areas.
