Kevin, a local family man with 6
children and 4 grandchildren, went to
the old schools in Cemetery Road and
North Road before leaving at 16 to
pursue a career in motor cycle racing
as a grasstrack and speedway rider.
He joined the Fire Service in St Ives in
1974 and rose through the ranks to
senior officer level, eventually retiring
as Assistant Divisional Officer on
health grounds after 27 years’ service.

Diana lives in the Old Manor House, parts of which date
from c1132. It is the oldest continually inhabited house in
England. She is the daughter-in-law of the famous author
Lucy Boston whose memory lives on in the many ornaments
and patchwork quilts on show in the house.
Kevin became involved in politics in
1988 as a town councillor, and was
also elected Conservative district
councillor for St Ives North. He was
Mayor in 1993 and suffered a heart
attack just 3 weeks before his term of
office ended. After making a full
recovery, he continued serving on both
councils and in 2000 took the chair of
Huntingdonshire District Council - only
the second St Ivian to be honoured in
this way, after the inaugural chairman
Bert Burgess. During his term he
guided the Council through major
changes, including the switch to a
controversial ‘cabinet’ system of local
government.
Here she relaxes in the garden with one of Lucy’s muchloved Green Knowe stories.
