CURRITUCK BEACH
ROANOKE MARSHES
Located in Corolla, it is the northernmost
lighthouse on the Outer Banks. At 162 feet,
climb the 220 steps of the only coastal red
brick Carolina lighthouse. Constructed of
approximately 1 million bricks, it still functions
as an active lighthouse. The light can be seen
for 18 nautical miles and rotates every 20
seconds. It was never painted to ensure that
captains could see the structure at sea. It has
undergone restoration over the past couple of
decades. The grounds are open year-round,
while the lighthouse is open seasonally.
Located in downtown Manteo, the Roanoke
Marshes Lighthouse is located 40 yards into
Shallowbag Bay of the Roanoke Sound. It
maintains the classic charm of the Outer Banks
that visitors can enjoy while walking on the
boardwalk. Although the lighthouse is only 10
years old, its design is a combination of several
lighthouses in the area. The waterfront consists
of several exhibits as you walk around the
boardwalk. The lighthouse is a centerpiece of
the downtown.
This lighthouse has a museum and park
surrounding it that makes for a great day trip.
Take in some local history or watch a beautiful
sunset from the grounds overlooking the water.
Check it out, especially as the sun goes down
and the lights illuminate over the water. It
makes for great picture taking, especially with
the water and marina in the background. If you
don't have time to stop in the area, check out
their local live stream online to see the
waterfront and lighthouse.
