Bee Attack on the PCT
July 15, 2021
A grandfather, his wife and two grandchildren had hiked over
five miles along the Pacific Crest Trail from Timberline Lodge to
Paradise Park. Soon after making camp, the 11-year-old male
grandchild was stung by a swarm of bees, which led to a panic
attack and difficulty breathing. Initially, the symptoms appeared
to align with anaphylactic shock or altitude sickness. The AMR
Reach and Treat Team and a CSAR member headed toward
Paradise Park first, while an additional 10 CSAR members
hiked in with a wheeled litter about 40 minutes later. The young
person was doing better when rescuers met up with him.
Volunteers were able to carry out the family’s gear, and
everyone returned safely to Timberline Lodge at about 10 p.m.
Running Team Finds
Disoriented Hiker
Sept. 6-7, 2021
A 62-year-old woman who had suffered a traumatic brain injury
that left her unable to hike safely alone took public transit to
Timberline Lodge with the goal of hiking “around the mountain”
by herself. Several volunteer CSAR teams headed out in the
dark to cover all of the possible trails. After covering over 15
miles of trails, CSAR’s Trail Running Team found the subject
lying in the middle of a trail. She was cold, tired and totally
unaware of where she was or where she should head next; it
was almost 2 a.m. Teams brought her out safely on a wheeled
litter by around 5 a.m.
Lost Mushroom Hunter
Oct. 19-20, 2021
On Oct. 19, CSAR was alerted to a missing 80-year-old man
who was hunting mushrooms. His van was located on Sherar
Burn Road, about 4 miles west of Trillium Lake. The search began around sunset and continued until the middle of the night
using K9 teams, drones and ground searchers. Other SAR
teams joined CSAR for the second day’s search. One returning
CSAR team encountered a civilian unaware of the search who
reported that he’d seen a man matching the subject’s description in a remote rock quarry which was several miles out of the
search area. The man was located tired, hungry and dehydrated, then returned to family who were gathered at base. The
man had become lost when he went back into the woods after
losing his keys (which he found).
In January 2021, CSAR search
crews helped investigators
recover the remains of a murder
victim reported missing in 1979;
his skeleton was found in
challenging terrain near Molalla.
