“I
was having problems swallowing,
and something got stuck in my throat.
I’d had periodic problems, but this
time was particularly bad. My wife, Judy,
insisted I see a gastroenterologist.
On December 28, 2022, I was diagnosed
with advanced localized squamous cell
carcinoma of the esophagus. I underwent
twenty-eight treatments of radiation
therapy with the UCLA Department of
Radiation Oncology in Westwood. I have
nothing but praise for this department. The
technicians who performed the treatments
were precise and cheerful. My radiation
oncologist, Dr. Ann Raldow, monitored
my treatment and progress. I could not ask
for a more thorough and compassionate
doctor to get me through this very di昀케cult
period. She met with me every Monday
and listened about my week and addressed
my concerns. I was lucky to have Dr.
Raldow and her team in charge, making
the experience non-traumatic.
ONE
PATIENT'S
CARE WITH
RADIATION
ONCOLOGY
I’m a marathoner and in addition to
the care I received at UCLA, I found
exercising throughout my illness very
helpful in coping with the physical and
emotional toll of cancer. My advice to
other patients—be as active as you can and
connect with other people. You don’t have
to do it alone."
