The leadership team at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton celebrates their staff during the organization’s ‘St.
Joe’s Day’.
his year marks the 18th edition of the
Hamilton-Niagara’s Top Employers competition
and we are pleased to released our expanded
announcement magazine in partnership with
the Hamilton Spectator. This year, our
editors have singled out 25 employers as regional leaders
in creating outstanding workplaces with best-in-class
benefits and HR policies.
For readers living in the Hamilton-Niagara area, it
should come as no surprise that the region is home to
some of Canada’s best employers. Our competition, which
uses a consistent set of selection criteria – from vacation
allowance to maternity and parental leave top-up – has
chronicled the stories of employers in the region for
almost two decades.
Stories like Burlington-based Sodexo Canada, which
encourages its 4,000+ employees to give back to the
community with two annual paid days off to volunteer.
The company also rewards it top employee-donors with a
$2,000 grant to the charity of their choosing.
Or take Waterdown-based Stryker Canada, which
organizes a variety of first-class events – from Ticats games
to family skating outings – for their 754 employees. Not
only do these events build community, but they also
provide a great way for employees to form friendships and
make connections with colleagues at all levels of the
company.
St. Catharines-based Niagara Health encourages its
staff to recognize ‘a job well done’ whenever colleagues go
above and beyond the call of duty. The healthcare
authority lets its 3,345 employees recognize a staff member
T
through a special gift card program, called ‘Just Because’.
Also in St. Catharines, the shipping and property firm
Algoma Central Corp. encourages its 1,400 employees to
upgrade their skills throughout their career via apprenticeships, mentoring and generous tuition subsidies to
local universities and colleges.
At WS Audiology in Burlington, employees have time
for life outside work with three weeks of paid vacation (for
new hires) plus up to five paid personal days off each year,
which employees can schedule as needed.
To determine this year’s winners, our editors reviewed
employers on eight criteria, which have remained
consistent since the inception of the competition: (1)
Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health,
Financial & Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time Off; (5)
Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training & Skills Development; and (8) Community Involvement. Any employer, private or public sector,
with its head office or principal place of business in the
Hamilton-Niagara area may apply for this competition.
This morning, our editors released the full reasons for
selection, explaining why each of the winners was chosen.
I encourage you to read these reasons on the competition
homepage: www.canadastop100.com/hamilton. If your
organization would like to be considered for next year’s
competition, I encourage you to contact our editorial
team: ct100@mediacorp.ca – we’re always on the lookout for
new employers raising the bar for their employees and
creating better workplaces.
