TOOLKIT FOR ESTABLISHING AND MAINTAINING
SUCCESSFUL EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUPS
This toolkit has been developed to support the growing interest among
employers in creating or strengthening Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). No
matter the size of the company or agency, the most successful approach to
launching or managing ERG initiatives is through learning from proven
strategies. This toolkit outlines key steps to effectively start, implement, and
sustain an ERG, providing actionable guidance for fostering inclusive and
empowering workplace environments.
THE IMPORTANCE OF EMPLOYEE RESOURCE
GROUPS
As the Latino population in the transit workforce grows, fostering equitable,
supportive workplaces is a priority. Many transit agencies and organizations are
developing internal structures like ERGs to address the unique needs of a diverse
workforce. Historically, ERG initiatives began with African American and women’s
groups and expanded to include Latino, Asian, LGBTQ+, disability-focused,
religious, generational, and veterans’ groups. Today, ERGs—embracing inclusivity
by welcoming members from all backgrounds—are gaining traction as strategic
business assets.
ERGs provide spaces for employees to network, share insights, and advocate for
common concerns. In transit, Latino-focused ERGs can help elevate Latino
voices, promote career advancement, and nurture an inclusive culture that
values diverse talents and perspectives. Research from the Society for Human
Resource Management underscores that ERGs not only attract and retain
diverse talent but also offer companies strategic advantages in a global
economy by enriching organizational perspectives and broadening marketplace
reach. For Latinos In Transit, ERGs contribute directly to improving workplace
culture, shedding light on unique barriers and advocating for impactful solutions.
These roles reveal how ERGs are powerful tools for advancing diversity,
recruitment, and business goals, demonstrating that diverse perspectives are
vital in shaping both workplace culture and strategic organizational success.
