Retrieve and record information from non-fiction

Explain that the children are going to be learning about
two exceptional individuals: Preet Chandi and Dave
Walsh. They will explore what they did, then write a diary
entry in their voice. Ask the children to discuss in pairs
what a diary entry is.
Hand out the All About Preet Chandi and All About
Dave Walsh sheets.

Optional brain break - let’s try to break some physical
world records!
Writing:
Plan writing by discussing writing similar to that which
they are planning to write in order to understand and
learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar
Discuss and record ideas
15 mins
Hand out the Dairy Writing Planner and ask children to
think about the exact moment that their entry will be
focusing on. This might be the day before attempting a
world record, the day of the world record or after
achieving a world record.
Some children may need
additional discussion to
help them empathise
and put themselves in
another person’s shoes.
Ask pupils to verbally rehearse what they will say in their
diary entries with their partner.

Writing:
Use inverted commas and other punctuation to
indicate direct speech
Use past, present and future tenses
Discuss writing similar to that which they are planning
to write in order to understand and learn from its
structure, vocabulary and grammar
Organise paragraphs around a theme
extending the range of sentences with more than one
clause by using a wider range of conjunctions, including
when, if, because, although
